Varicose, thread
and facial veins

Varicose, thread and facial veins can deeply impact someone’s
self confidence.

However, they can have medical implications too:

  • They can progress skin issues like eczema, skin staining and discolouration

  • Contribute to ankle and leg swelling

  • Lead to blood clot conditions like Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT), Bleeding and Thrombophlebitis.

We tackle most venous conditions including:

  • Varicose veins

  • Thread veins

  • Facial veins

  • Complications following Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT)

  • Leg Ulcers.

Treatments

We assess every patient thoroughly both clinically and by Duplex Ultrasound scan.

Mr Onwudike will personally take you through the details of each procedure and realistic outcomes so you can make an informed choice.

As well as traditional surgery, we provide the latest minimally-invasive techniques that do not require general anaesthetic (unless requested:.

  • Radiofrequency (Venefit) or LASER Ablation

  • Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

  • Mechano-chemical Ablation (Clarivein)

  • A combination of techniques.

Radiofrequency (Venefit) or LASER Ablation:

Through a catheter placed within the vein under ultrasound guidance, Radiofrequency or LASER energy is converted to heat which seals the affected vein.

This will stop the blood flowing in the wrong direction and relieve your symptoms.

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy:

An approved-chemical is mixed with air to produce a foam. This foam is injected into the affected vein using an ultrasound scan for guidance.

This pushes the affected blood out of the way, killing the cells causing the inflammation.

Clarivein:

Under an ultrasound for control, a rotating wire is used to disrupt the inner lining of the vein. At the same time injecting the same chemical used in foam sclerotherapy.

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are the most common issue we treat at Bolton Vascular Surgery.

They are caused usually by weaker veins and valves. As you age, your veins lose their ‘elasticity’, and then you might see some develop.

They usually are associated with cosmetic concerns, but they can feel itchy, heavy, swollen or generally uncomfortable.

We use a Duplex Ultrasound scan to get a better understanding of any issues; it uses high-frequency sound waves to produce a picture of them.

If your veins start bleeding, call 111 immediately.
